Fernando Alonso has wrapped up his private test in the Renault R.S.18 at Bahrain as he continues preparations for his Formula 1 comeback in 2021.
The Spaniard completed 93 laps in the car on Wednesday, adding to the 93 he tallied on Tuesday.
Alonso has already driven Renault’s 2020 car earlier this year at a filming day in Barcelona, but was limited to just 100 km of running due to strict regulations regarding testing outside grand prix weekends.
Teams are allowed to hold private tests at their own expense, but are restricted to using a car that’s at least two years old.
Renault was hoping to fit Alonso in the R.S. 20 at the post-season young drivers’ test later this year, however that idea is set to be abandoned amid unrest from rival teams over the plan.
Alonso will join Esteban Ocon at the Enstone-based squad in 2021, replacing Daniel Ricciardo who will leave at the end of the current campaign to link up with McLaren.
Renault, the team with which Alonso won his two World Championships in 2005 and 2006, will be rebranded to the Alpine Formula 1 Team next year.
With four races remaining in the 2020 season, Renault currently sits third in the Constructors’ Championship, sitting just one point ahead of McLaren and Racing Point.
Renault scored its first two podiums of the turbo hybrid era this year, the second of which came at the last grand prix at Imola.
