Charles Leclerc expressed disappointment with his qualifying effort at Formula 1’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix after he took seventh place.
Leclerc set the fourth-best time at Portimao a week ago but slipped into the midfield on Ferrari’s home soil at Imola.
Leclerc finished the 12-minute shootout session in seventh position though was only just over a tenth of a second behind AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly, who scored fourth.
“We probably expected something more but P7 is what we could do today, everything is close,” said Leclerc.
“Looking at my lap I’m not very satisfied with my lap and the way I drove in Q3 but it’s life.
“Looking at the gaps between me and Pierre it’s a bit disappointing but he did an amazing job and an amazing lap and I didn’t today so that’s it and hopefully tomorrow we’ll have a better day.”
Ferrari team-mate Sebastian Vettel failed to make it through to Q3 for the ninth straight event.
Vettel also had a lap time deleted in Q2 for failing to adhere to track limits and will line up from 14th spot.
“It didn’t feel too bad, I thought I had a reasonable session but obviously I’m not happy with the way I am positioned,” he said.
“I think today was better than other sessions in terms of how I felt at least but result wise it was probably similar.”
