Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing has announced that it will retain the services of veteran IndyCar driver Takuma Sato next season.
Sato has raced with the team for four seasons and has earned four wins in that time, including his second Indy 500 victory earlier this season.
“I am very excited to continue with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing for the 2021 season,” said Sato.
“The 2020 season was an unforgettable one for many reasons.
“Our Indy 500 win was a truly special moment and I want to thank everyone at the team again.
“We are already focused on the future and I am really looking forward to 2021.”
Sato sits sixth in the points with one race remaining in the 2020 season, and it would be his highest points finish if he can maintain his position over Simon Pagenaud.
Graham Rahal, Sato’s team-mate, sits just ahead in the points, and together they contribute to the team’s best combined points results in many years.
“I am very pleased that we were able to come to terms with Takuma to continue with us in 2021,” said Bobby Rahal, co-owner of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.
“Clearly it has been a successful partnership over the last several years, culminating in this year’s Indy 500 victory and I look forward to further success with Takuma throughout 2021.”
The news comes just ahead of the first practice session for this weekend’s finale at St. Petersburg, Florida, where Sato will make his 182nd career IndyCar start.
Qualifying follows later this afternoon, and the GP of St. Petersburg takes place Sunday at 2:30 PM EDT.
