Charles Leclerc insists he is “ready to wait” for success with Ferrari in the wake of team boss Mattia Binotto cautioning that it could be “many years” before it contends for regular victories.
Ferrari has challenged at the front of the grid across 2017 to 2019, with Leclerc victorious twice last year, but it has slumped into the midfield this season.
But Leclerc, who is tied down to Ferrari until 2024, says he is willing to wait for the team to be competitive once again.
“Well on one hand I don’t really have the choice!” Leclerc said. “But surely it will take some patience and I am ready to wait.
“It’s also my job to try and make this whole process as short as possible and for us to come back where we deserve to be.
“It’s not going to be easy, it will take time, but I’m ready for this and my job is to give my best anyway in every situation we are in.”
In 2022, new technical regulations will come into play, as the FIA looks to bring the cars closer together on the grid and eliminate the gap that exists between the front-runners and the midfield teams.
While Leclerc admits he’s looking forward to seeing what the new regulations bring, his main focus is currently fixated on helping Ferrari through a difficult 2020 campaign.
“Surely there’s a bit of both in my head but I think the most important for now is trying to work out why we’re struggling so much this year, this will help the future anyway.
“I’m trying to work as hard as possible – like everyone does in the team – to try and find the issues and have a solid basis for the years to come.”
