Robin Frijns has taken his second pole position in DTM, beating team-mate Nico Müller with a late flyer at the Lausitzring.
Müller looked set to have taken pole position after leading both practice session and put in a 01:15:592 to seemingly top the timesheets before Frijns improved in the dying minutes of the session. The Dutchman put in a time of 01:15:486 to beat Müller to pole by 0.106s.
Loic Duval completed a top-three lockout for Audi. The Frenchman’s best effort of 01:15:682 was just under two-tenths off pole.
BMW runners had a stronger qualifying outing than they had at the opening races at Spa-Francorchamps. Sheldon van der Linde briefly held pole with a time of 01:15:685 before he was outpaced by the three Audi drivers, but will start fourth.
The South African is joined in the top ten by BMW colleagues Timo Glock and Marco Wittmann in fifth and sixth respectively.
Rene Rast, winless in 2020 after he was stripped of his Spa victory on Friday, was unable to match the pace of the front runners and qualified seventh, 0.353s off pole. The top ten was completed by Jamie Green, Mike Rockenfeller and Jonathan Aberdein.
Philipp Eng qualified eleventh for BMW ahead of Ferdinand Habsburg, with Fabio Scherer the best-placed rookie in thirteenth.
The grid was completed by Lucas Auer, Harrison Newey and Robert Kubica.
