Bent Viscaal battled superbly with Lirim Zendeli to win his first FIA Formula 3 race at Silverstone after overtaking the German on the final lap.
The Dutchman darted his way ahead of reverse-grid pole sitter Ben Barnicoat at the start to find himself second behind Zendeli for the first 19 laps.
An early Safety Car bunched up the field following Calan Williams and Lukas Dunner stopping on the Wellington straight with damage.
Barnicoat remained in third up until Lap 11 when mechanical problems forced him to retire on the exit of Stowe.
Viscaal pounced on Zendeli on the last lap initially at Copse before the Trident pilot fought back at Stowe. The battle continued through Vale and on the penultimate corner, the MP Motorsport driver got great traction to swing round the outside of Zendeli to beat him over the line by less than two tenths of a second.
Theo Pourchaire was able to come home third for ART, with David Beckmann’s drag race with Liam Lawson over the line catapulting him into fourth.
Oscar Piastri finished sixth and closed down the gap to championship leader Logan Sargeant to just a single point, as the American failed to finish for the first time this season following contact with Cameron Das at Copse.
Jake Hughes brought home more points for HWA Racelab in seventh in front of Frederik Vesti, Clement Novalak and Enzo Fittipaldi, who make up the points scorers. Viscaal also the got the two points for the fastest lap.
The sixth round of the 2020 FIA Formula 3 Championship will be next weekend in Barcelona, part of the Spanish Grand Prix support bill.
