The #6 and #17 Roush Fenway Racing teams of drivers Ryan Newman and Chris Buescher were penalized at Michigan International Speedway before cars got on track Saturday for the first of two weekend races there for the NASCAR Cup Series.
Both teams and drivers were docked 20 points because of an issue with their cars’ spoilers during pre-race inspections for the FireKeepers Casino 400. Scott Graves, Newman’s crew chief, and Luke Lambert, Buescher’s crew chief, were fined $25,000, and the spoilers were confiscated.
According to NASCAR officials, the spoilers were in violation of 12.4.12.b of the 2020 rule book that states spoilers must be used as supplied by the manufacturer.
Newman and Buescher also had to start Saturday’s race in the back because of the infraction. Buescher finished the race in the 20th position, and Newman finished 28th.
