Da Costa flies to third consecutive pole position in Berlin

Antonio Felix da Costa (PRT), DS Techeetah, celebrates with the Julius Baer Pole Position award

Antonio Felix da Costa flew to a record-equalling third consecutive pole position for DS Techeetah in the second race of Formula E’s Season 6 finale in Berlin.

As the championship leader, the Portuguese racer launched his initial qualifying run from Group 1 and ended the opening stages as the second fastest runner behind Nissan e.dams’ Sebastien Buemi.

As the penultimate runner of Super Pole, da Costa shot up to the provisional top spot after eclipsing Alex Lynn’s previous benchmark by 0.477s with a 1:06.442s lap.

When Buemi failed to match the winningest driver of the current campaign, the Swiss driver settled into second, leaving da Costa with a clear road for the seventh race of the season.

Lynn ended up third overall in only his second race for Mahindra while Nyck de Vries placed fourth for Mercedes EQ, heading Robin Frijns and Lucas di Grassi who completed the third row in fifth and sixth.

Outside of the final Super Pole session, Oliver Rowland took seventh in the second Nissan e.dams entry after getting pushed out of the top six by Group 4 runner Lynn.

Reigning back-to-back champion Jean-Eric Vergne followed Rowland in eighth place after failing to progress from Group 2 while Sam Bird followed in the second Envision Virgin, taking ninth. Edoardo Mortara completed the top 10.

Jaguar Racing’s woes again continued into Race 2 as championship protagonist Mitch Evans managed only 17th place ahead of team-mate James Calado who was 23rd.

Fellow title rivals Stoffel Vandoorne and Alexander Sims crept ahead of the Kiwi in the classification session, with the Mercedes EQ racer taking 13th while the trailing Briton was 15th, facing a 20-place grid penalty for the race following a battery change.
