Roberto Merhi has been announced as the third driver in Eurasia Motorsport’s line-up for the Total Six Hours of Spa-Francorchamps.
The 29-year-old will partner the previously confirmed Nobuya Yamanaka and Daniel Gaunt aboard the #35 Ligier JS P217-Gibson.
Merhi has raced with Eurasia Motorsport during the 2019/20 Asian Le Mans Series, where he captured pole position at the Shanghai round and took three podiums en route to third in the standings.
It marks the Spaniard’s return to the FIA World Endurance Championship for the first time since the 2017 6 Hours of Nürburgring, where he drove for Manor, with which he also competed in the 2015 Formula One season.
Merhi’s only podium in the WEC also came at Spa-Francorchamps, when he finished third for Manor alongside Matt Rao and Richard Bradley.
“I am really looking forward to joining the team again in Europe and it will be great to race once again in the FIA WEC and in Spa,” Merhi said. “I finished in the podium in 2016 so I am long overdue an LMP2 return to such a great venue and series.”
“We look forward to welcoming Roberto back into the car,” said Eurasia Motorsport team principal Mark Goddard. “He was very quick in Asia, an environment that was quite new to him and showed his quality with pole position in Shanghai and on top of that he was a really nice guy to have around the team, so will be a good asset to help Nobuya and Dan get to grips with the car and track which will be new to them.”
