The hospital treating Alex Zanardi says he remains in a serious but stable condition and will no longer issue medical updates unless his prognosis changes.
Zanardi, 53, was involved in a road collision in his native Italy on Friday and was immediately transferred to Siena’s University Hospital.
Doctors carried out neurosurgery and maxillofacial surgery to address a severe head injury, after which Zanardi was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit.
The hospital has since issued regular official bulletins on his condition and on Wednesday posted that he had spent a fifth night without substantial changes in his condition.
He remains in a medically-induced coma and is being constantly evaluated by doctors.
Following consultations with Zanardi’s family it has been decided to no longer provide updates until there are “significant changes” in his condition.
Zanardi started 41 Formula 1 races in the 1990s either side of a successful spell in CART in which he claimed back-to-back titles.
He has competed in handcycling in the aftermath of the accident at the Lausitzring in 2001 that resulted in the amputation of both legs.
