Finland’s return to the MotoGP calendar has been postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which has halted sport globally for the foreseeable future.
Finland had been set to host its first premier class motorcycle event since 1981 at the newly constructed KymiRing on July 12 as the opening round on a revised calendar following the postponement of several earlier races, including the cancelled season-opening Qatar round.
“The decision to postpone the Finnish MotoGP race is made by Dorna Sports, which owns rights of the competition,” a brief statement issued by the organisers said.
“The Finnish government has recommended that events for more than 500 people not be held before August due to a coronavirus pandemic. Decision to postpone the MotoGP Finland competition is made by Dorna Sports and race track owner KymiRing in accordance with the instructions of the Finnish Government.
“Dorna Sport has promised to announce the future of MotoGP Finland as soon as possible.”
Brno becomes the default season-opener now on August 9, but it’s likely this too will be postponed. Austria is the following round and with the circuit planning to open the Formula 1 season in July with a double-header behind closed doors, it could well push ahead with its MotoGP round too.
