The Dutch TT at Assen has become the latest round of the MotoGP world championship to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with an autumn date targeted for resumption.
The Dutch classic has become the tenth event so far on the ’20 schedule to be cancelled or rescheduled as the effects of coronavirus continue to take hold around the globe, new restrictions from the Dutch government forcing the event organisers to delay the race until later in the autumn, or possibly next year.
A statement released from the organisers this morning confirmed that any purchased tickets will remain valid for whenever the race gets underway, and that they are in discussion with MotoGP promoters Dorna Sports to try and find a new date as soon as possible.
“Unfortunately, the recent measures announced by the government mean that the 90th TT Assen will be postponed until the autumn or until next season,” read the statement on the circuits’ website.
“We are in discussions with the organiser Dorna about this. Tickets that have already been purchased will remain valid. Of course the TT Circuit Assen organisation is very disappointed, but despite that we do fully support the government’s decision.
“The health of the fans and all other parties involved is our highest priority. Stay safe and we hope to see you soon at TT Circuit Assen!”
The inaugural Finnish round of the championship-due to held at the newly built KymiRing in mid-July- is also now under threat due to the Finnish government the latest to announce that all mass gatherings in the country will be banned until the end of July.
No confirmation of the status of the race has been confirmed at time of writing, but the only way it can go ahead would be with a later date, most likely in the autumn should space be found.
All this means that the Czech grand prix at Brno now becomes the effective season opener, currently due to take place on the 9th of August just after the intended summer break during the normal season.
