The French grand prix scheduled to go ahead at Le Mans on the 17th of May has been postponed indefinitely due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

The event becomes the latest to be postponed as a result of the continued Covid 19 situation, with four of the preceding five contests having already been shuffled to later in the schedule, while the Qatar premier class outing was cancelled completely.

“The FIM, IRTA and Dorna Sports regret to announce the postponement of the SHARK Helmets Grand Prix de France, which was set to be held at the Bugatti Circuit in Le Mans from the 15th to the 17th of May,” read a collective statement from the FIM, IRTA and MotoGP promoter Dorna.

“The ongoing coronavirus outbreak has obliged the event to be rescheduled.

“As the situation remains in a state of constant evolution, new dates for the French GP and the recently-postponed Gran Premio Red Bull de España cannot be confirmed until it becomes clearer when exactly it will be possible to hold the events. A revised calendar will be published as soon as available.”

The cornoavirus has now infected nearly a million people globally, and taken the lives of over 47,000 since originated from Wuhan in China only a few months ago.

Most racing series around the world are targeting sometime in June to get events back underway, but with Covid-19 showing no signs of slowing, it could take significantly longer until race action resumes.

The season is now provisionally set to get underway with the Italian GP at Mugello two weeks after the now vacant French GP weekend, although as the situation in Italy remains tricky this event may also be in danger of being either postponed or scrapped altogether.
