Edoardo Mortara set the pace in a shortened opening practice session for the Mexico City E-Prix at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
Rain on Friday night rendered circuit conditions tricky for the opening practice session of the weekend, and as the circuit evolved, it was the ROKiT Venturi Racing driver who set the pace.
Mortara set a best lap of a 1m 09.273s to top the 45-minute session that was red-flagged with 12-minutes remaining after Daniel Abt crashed in Turn 9.
When it was confirmed that the session would not be resumed, Pascal Wehrlein emerged as the Swiss-Italian’s nearest challenger, 0.347s off the pace.
The German racer fronted a 2-3 result for Mahindra Racing, with team-mate Jerome d’Ambrosio completing the top three.
Felipe Massa was fourth in the second Venturi car while championship leader Stoffel Vandoorne was fifth – the Belgian having a close call with the barriers on the exit of Turn 2.
Lucas di Grassi was the lead Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler driver in sixth while Sebastien Buemi was seventh for Nissan e.dams, 0.049s behind his long-term rival ahead.
GEOX Dragon cemented the eighth fastest time in FP1 through the services of Nico Muller while Andre Lotterer was ninth for Porsche. Antonio Felix da Costa completed the top 10 for DS Techeetah.
Following his accidnet in FP1, Abt was taken to hospital for further examination as an additional measure of precaution.
