David Cheng and Manuel Cabrera will stand in for Yaqi Zhang and Sun Chow for this weekend’s Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY race in Mexico City due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 coronavirus.
The Covid-19 coronavirus broke out in December 2019 in the Chinese city of Wuhan and gained traction in January, killing over 1,000 people with over 45,000 cases reported.
This has led to the cancellation and rescheduling of a number of sporting events set to take place in China over the coming months, including Formula E’s Sanya E-Prix.
Motorsport’s Governing Body, the FIA confirmed the postponement of Formula 1’s Chinese Grand Prix – that was originally scheduled for April 19 – on Tuesday.
Zhang and Chow drive for the Pro-Am Team China Racing squad in the Formula E support series, however, have been unable to travel to Mexico City as a result of flight restrictions.
This means that Cheng, who made one start last season as Jaguar’s VIP driver for Sanya, will return to the series while Cabrera will partner the Jackie Chan DC Racing co-founder.
Cabrera, 19, most recently competed in the USF 2000 championship in 2019 and holds one Drivers’ Championship, recorded in Formula PANAM in 2017.
NIO 333 Racing’s Ma Qing Hua – Formula E’s only Chinese driver – traveled to Mexico City in advance to undergo a precautionary 14-day quarantine to ensure his presence at the fourth race of the 2019/20 campaign.
The Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY will race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez this weekend on February 15, supporting Formula E.
