World Champions Lewis Hamilton, Marc Marquez and Mercedes have been nominated for Laureus’ World Sports Awards, with Sophia Floersch also featuring.
Hamilton and Marquez claimed their respective sixth titles in 2019, with the Briton taking the Formula 1 crown and Marquez romping to the MotoGP world title.
Mercedes also took its sixth successive title in Formula 1’s Constructors’ Championship.
Hamilton and Marquez have been nominated for the World Sportsman of the Year while Mercedes is up for the Team of the Year award.
Neither Hamilton nor Marquez have previously won the award, which for four of the last five seasons has been collected by a tennis player, with Novak Djokovic a three-time recipient.
The duo face competition from long-distance runner Eliud Kipchoge, footballer Lionel Messi, tennis player Rafael Nadal, and golfer Tiger Woods.
Mercedes won the award in 2018, for its 2017 achievements, and also claimed the prize under its Brawn Grand Prix moniker in 2010, for its 2009 title triumphs.
Liverpool Football Club, South Africa’s Rugby Team, Spain’s Men’s Basketball Team, Basketball’s Toronto Raptors and the United States Women’s Football Team are Mercedes’ fellow nominees.
Meanwhile in the comeback category Formula 3 driver Floersch is one of six nominees.
Floersch has been recognised for her return to Formula 3’s Macau Grand Prix in 2019, a year after the violent high-speed crash that left her with spinal injuries.
This year’s ceremony will take place on February 17th in Berlin.
