Fernando Alonso’s Dakar Rally hopes took a hit during the tenth stage on Wednesday as he rolled his Toyota Hilux.
The two-time Formula 1 champion hit a dune at an awkward angle, causing his truck to roll twice before coming to a stop the right way up at the bottom of the dune.
The incident happened just two kilometres into the 534km stage.
The Hilux was visibly damaged, but it’s believed Alonso and co-driver Marc Coma were able to continue after removing the smashed windscreen.
The duo were sitting in 10th position, just over three hours adrift of leader Carlos Sainz, but the incident has cost them more than an hour as they assessed the damage to their vehicle.
