Oliver Pla tops DPi Roar qualifying, James Calado quickest in GTLM

Acura Team Penske heads first Sunday Roar session

Olivier Pla and James Calado have set the quickest times in the second of two qualifying session at the Roar Before the 24.

The session, which are held to determine pitboxes and garages for the Rolex 24 at Daytona later this month, were held for LMP2 and GTD yesterday, with DPi and GTLM following suit today.

Pla underlined Mazda Team Joest’s strong pace throughout the weekend by topping the sheets in DPi, setting a 01:33:324 in the #77 Mazda RT24-P. Ricky Taylor took second in the #7 Team Penske Acura ARX-05, just over three-tenths behind the Frenchman but 0.021s clear of team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya in the #6 Acura.

Felipe Nasr was the session’s quickest Cadillac driver in the #31 Whelen Engineering DPi-VR, posting fourth with a 01:33:652 ahead of Mazda’s Jonathan Bomarito, JDC-Miller’s Tristan Vautier and the Mustang Sampling entry of Joao Barbosa. Renger van der Zande brought up the rear in the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac.

James Calado led the way in GTLM for Risi Competizione, piloting the #82 Ferrari 488 GTE to a time of 01:42:685.

Porsche’s Nick Tandy took second with a last-minute improvement to finish just 0.001s behind Calado in the #911 Porsche 911 RSR-19. Tommy Milner completed the top three for Corvette, a further 0.107s behind Tandy in the #4 Corvette C8.R. 

Jesse Krohn was fourth in the #24 BMW M8 GTE, ahead of the #912 Porsche of reigning class champion Laurens Vanthoor, the #25 BMW of Philipp Eng and Antonio Garcia’s #3 Corvette.
