Mazda Motorsports has confirmed 2012 IndyCar champion Ryan Hunter-Reay will join the team for the Michelin Endurance Cup events in the 2020 WeatherTech IMSA Championship.
Hunter-Reay will be returning to the #55 Team Joest car with Harry Tinknell and Jonathan Bomarito for the four endurance rounds which will get underway with the Rolex Daytona 24 later this month.
He also has previous experience with sportscars having raced prototypes alongside his IndyCar commitments in recent years. He also has a Petit Le Mans victory to his name with Wayne Taylor Racing in 2018.
The Texan recently got a taste of the Mazda RT24-P DPi machine after filling in for British driver, Harry Tinknell at Mid-Ohio last season, finishing in third place.
He will also be taking part in the other three endurance events at the 12 hours of Sebring, Six Hours at the Glen and the IMSA season finale with Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta.
“I’m thrilled to be joining Mazda Team Joest for the 2020 IMSA endurance races,” said Hunter-Reay.
“I filled in for Harry at Mid-Ohio last year, teaming up with my buddy Jonathan Bomarito, and from the first practice, I knew the car really suited my driving style.
“I thoroughly enjoyed working with the whole team – it’s a first-class effort all around. We capped off the weekend with a double-podium for Mazda and I’ve been eager to get back in the RT24-P ever since. I’m excited for what this team is capable of in 2020, and I’m ready to get to work!”
