Mercedes has confirmed that Esteban Gutierrez will act as the team’s reserve and development programme for its nascent Formula E project.
Mercedes will enter the championship for the 2019/20 season, which begins next weekend in Saudi Arabia.
The marque has recruited ex-McLaren F1 racer Stoffel Vandoorne, who competed for Mercedes-linked HWA last season, and newly-crowned F2 champion Nyck de Vries to spearhead its driver line-up.
Gutierrez started 59 grands prix for Sauber and Haas, as well as three Formula E races, but since 2018 has been affiliated with Mercedes.
The Mexican has carried out duties in Mercedes’ simulator to assist its Formula 1 team since 2018 and will now add a Formula E role to his programme.
Gutierrez tested Mercedes’ EQ Silver Arrow 01 during pre-season running in August and will join Gary Paffett as a reserve and simulator driver.
“We will face a lot of challenges in our first season in Formula E, so I'm really pleased we've been able to acquire the services of Esteban, another experienced driver," said Team Principal, Ian James.
"He did an excellent job during testing in Majorca, fitting in perfectly with the team.
“He has a lot of experience to offer from racing in a number of different series – Formula 1, Formula E and Indycar – and has also gained a lot of know-how in the simulator about how to develop and setup a car.”
