Ferrari won't be bringing any more significant upgrades to its Formula 1 car this season according to the team's Sporting Director, Laurent Mekies.
Ferrari were favourites for the wins in Belgium and Monza thanks to their straight-line advantage, but Singapore was supposed to favour both Mercedes and Red Bull, however the Italian outfit brought a major upgrade to the race and went on to secure a surprise 1-2 finish – the first recorded 1-2 at the street circuit since it joined the calendar.
Even that came as a surprise to Ferrari according to Mekies: "We brought a lot of new parts to Singapore, so you are always hoping they will perform at best. If anything, yes, we were a bit surprised to be able to close the gap as much as we did. Nonetheless, we are conscious that the gaps are very small."
It's been reported Ferrari have finally validated their on-track performance with what they're wind tunnel says, and this resulted in a Singapore upgrade that vastly improved their slow-to-medium speed cornering, which bodes well for the remaining six races.
Mekies is keen to see how the upgrade performs in Russia this weekend as it will prove a good indicator for the rest of the season, though he says the team's attention has now switched to its 2020 car, so no further upgrades are expected.
"Here I guess we’ll have another good data point to understand if it’s going to be the case everywhere or if it’s going to be a lot more work needed.
"[But] I think it’s that time of the year when we are all switching our attentions to 2020 so I don’t think there will be anything significant from now until the end of the season.
"On top of that, you also need to start to thinking about what’s going to happen next. So the short answer is there won’t be anything significant [upgrade-wise] anymore."
