Robert Kubica says he has a “clear view” on his possible plans for the 2020 season, as teams continue to finalise their driver line-ups and shortlists.
In recent weeks Mercedes, Renault and Racing Point have locked down their pairings for next season, while Haas has outlined it is evaluating Romain Grosjean and Nico Hulkenberg as its options.
Kubica returned to Formula 1 this year after an eight-year absence but his comeback coincided with Williams’ slump to the rear of the grid.
Kubica has also struggled for performance and has yet to out-qualify rookie team-mate George Russell, though did score the team’s sole point in the rain-hit German Grand Prix.
“I think I have let’s say a clear view on what is possible, what is not possible, and what I would like to do,” said Kubica when asked by Motorsport Week about his current situation.
“Sooner or later there will be some decisions and probably once the decision will be in place there will be a follow-up on what I might do next year or what I will not be doing next year.”
When pressed on whether he felt he had proven he deserved to stay, Kubica replied: “I don’t know. First of all as I say we have to see if what will be my decision and what I will be doing next year for myself and we will see what is possible.”
Kubica will partake in this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix using an old-spec engine after his new Mercedes power unit failed on the installation lap in qualifying in Belgium last weekend.
“I will have to use my second power unit of this year so the engine that has done already six events and it’s not the latest spec,” he said.
When asked why the decision had been taken to remain on an old unit, and not a new specification, he responded: “I don’t know.”
