World Champion Lewis Hamilton says he has changed his approach for the ongoing Formula 1 summer break, in the wake of the illness he suffered.

Hamilton competed at the German Grand Prix while unwell and admitted that he was not back to full fitness by the time the paddock rolled into Hungary the following week.

“In the past I’d go into this break and I was 100% fit and I could go and party for multiple days and then go into the recovery and stuff,” he said.

“I’m not in that place at the moment. I’ve been fit all year but I’ve got to make sure I get my energy back, also going to be spending a lot of time with family.

“I’m a bit of a night owl, I like staying up late, because I don’t really sleep a huge amount, so I’ll try and focus on shifting that and waking up early and seeing the sunrise wherever I am.

“I might try meditation, just a few different things, healthier lifestyle, and my close good friends around me will be doing the same.”

Hamilton also stressed that he wants his Mercedes team to be “completely straight” during the summer break and provide constructive criticism as to where improvements can be found.

“I’ve asked my guys, I want everyone to send me an email, just be completely straight the things we can improve on,” he said.

“I want the second half to be even stronger than the first half. So please just give us that and I’ll also do the same.

“I’m 34 years old but I feel like I’m driving better than ever.”

Hamilton leads Valtteri Bottas in the Drivers' Championship by 62 points.
