World Champion Lewis Hamilton led the way during a closely-contested final practice session for Formula 1’s Hungarian Grand Prix, which took place in dry and warm conditions.
Hamilton clocked a time of 1:16.084 in a reduced-time session, with clean-up from an oil spill in the preceding Formula 2 race delaying the session for 10 minutes.
As the drivers completed qualifying simulations on Soft tyres during the closing stages of the session Hamilton moved to the front by just 0.013s.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was Hamilton’s nearest opponent, while Sebastian Vettel ensured the top three drivers were covered by less than a tenth of a second.
Ferrari set strong pace through the first two sectors but faded in the third sector, leaving Charles Leclerc fifth, behind Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas.
Pierre Gasly was sixth, six-tenths behind Hamilton, and just 0.090s in front of the impressive Lando Norris.
Norris pulled clear of the midfield battle but Kimi Raikkonen, Carlos Sainz Jr. and Kevin Magnussen were split by just 0.014s at the foot of the top 10, half a second adrift of Norris.
Romain Grosjean was within a tenth of Haas team-mate Magnussen as the duo continued to run different car set-ups.
Daniil Kvyat was 12th for Toro Rosso, ahead of Nico Hulkenberg (Renault), Sergio Perez (Racing Point), Antonio Giovinazzi (Alfa Romeo), Daniel Ricciardo (Renault) and Alexander Albon (Toro Rosso).
George Russell continued his eye-catching form as he placed 18th, within two seconds of pacesetter Hamilton, and just 0.048s down on Albon.
Russell’s time also left him half a second clear of Racing Point’s Lance Stroll, while Robert Kubica classified last, two-tenths down on the Canadian.
Qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix will begin at 15:00 local time
