Alfa Romeo has promoted Jan Monchaux to the position of Technical Director of its Formula 1 team, amid the imminent departure of Simone Resta.
Monchaux is currently Head of Aerodynamics at the Switzerland-based team, which currently holds sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship.
Monchaux joined Alfa Romeo under its Sauber guise in early 2018 as part of the team's recruitment drive, and will take up his new position on August 1.
Resta only joined Alfa Romeo as its Technical Director in mid-2018, as a replacement for Jorg Zander, but is set to leave for Ferrari at the end of the month.
Resta previously spent 17 years with the Italian marque during which he rose to the role of Chief Designer.
“I am very excited about this new challenge and I am looking forward to starting in my new position,” said Monchaux.
“The owners, board and team principal are sending a simple but strong message to the whole company – they value continuity and believe in the existing team and the work we have been doing.
“It is now up to us to prove them right, but I am convinced our future is bright.”
Alfa Romeo’s current position of sixth is a gain of two places compared to Sauber’s 2018 classification, with the team having been last as recently as 2017.
“I am delighted to have him step up to the role of Technical Director,” said team boss Frederic Vasseur of Monchaux.
“He has done a brilliant job so far and I am confident he will be able to lead our technical group as the team continues its upward journey.”
