Officials at Austrian Grand Prix host venue Red Bull Ring have re-named the first corner in honour of the late Niki Lauda.

The Red Bull Ring has hosted Formula 1 since the energy drinks giant brought Formula 1 back to the renovated venue in 2014.

It previously hosted grands prix under the Osterreichring guise and A1-Ring moniker.

Lauda won at the Osterreichring during his third and final title-winning campaign in 1984.

Lauda went on to hold a management role at Mercedes, which has taken four wins at the Red Bull Ring, but passed away in May aged 70, following a short illness.

“Becoming a permanent part of the Red Bull Ring Turn 1 will now always be known as the Niki Lauda Kurve,” Red Bull announced on Sunday morning. "A fitting tribute to a champion, legend and friend."

Tributes to Lauda have been paid throughout the Austrian Grand Prix weekend, with the walkway beneath the circuit bedecked in pictures that celebrate his life.

A version of the Ferrari 312 T4, the car raced by Lauda from 1975 to 1977, has been placed on display in the paddock.
