Sebastian Vettel hits out at ‘blind’ stewards after penalty robs him of victory

Sebastian Vettel has hit out the Canadian Grand Prix stewards after he was handed a five-second time penalty whilst leading the race, but after the addition of the time penalty, he dropped to second behind Lewis Hamilton.

The Ferrari driver made a mistake on Lap 47 of 70 at Turn 3 and cut across the grass whilst under pressure from Hamilton behind. He then re-joined alongside the Mercedes driver, forcing Hamilton to brake hard to avoid making contact with Vettel on his left or the wall on his right.

The stewards applied a five-second time penalty and when Vettel was informed over team radio, he accused the stewards of being "blind".

Ferrari keen to ‘make the difference’ in Charles Leclerc F1 mission statement

"You need to be an absolute blind man to think you can go through the grass and then control the car," he said. "I was lucky I didn't hit the wall. Where the hell am I supposed to go? This is a wrong world I tell you. This is not fair."

His engineer Ricardo Adami came over the radio to ask Vettel to calm down, to which he replied: "I am not staying calm. This is not fair. It is not fair. I'm angry and I have the right to be angry. I don't care what people say."

Immediately after the race, Vettel jumped out of his car and stormed off to the Ferrari motorhome and only returned for the podium after being persuaded to by Ferrari's press officer.

But before Vettel joined Hamilton and team-mate Charles Leclerc in the cool down room, he moved the #1 board in front of his car and put the #2 board in front of Hamilton's car.

The crowd booed race winner Hamilton on the podium, before Vettel stepped in and pleaded with the fans to boo the decision, not the driver.

"The people shouldn't boo at Lewis. He saw what was going on… but people shouldn't boo at Lewis. If anything they should boo at these funny decisions."
