McLaren-backed youngster Sérgio Sette Câmara says he has to “get the confidence back” in Formula 2 in the wake of a difficult start to his 2019 campaign.
Sette Câmara was sixth in last year’s standings, despite missing one round through injury, and four of the five drivers above him in that classification have since moved on.
But, after a double podium finish in Bahrain, Sette Câmara has picked up just a handful more points, and now faces a 60-point deficit to DAMS team-mate, Williams reserve Nicholas Latifi.
“I think it’s always important to be reframing and then in case I get into a chance to fight for the title I’ll reframe again,” said Sette Câmara of his F2 title hopes.
“But definitely, I’m not in the same position and with the same frame as I was at the beginning of the championship.
“In the end it is not just about the points but the shape itself.
“I need to regain confidence with my car with my ream, it’s a slow process. If I say like in Monaco I will try the pole and get two wins, I’m just going to probably damage that even more: relationships, confidence, everything.
“It’s just important to maybe bring the expectations and the hopes a bit down and then rebuild from there.
“If I get into a shot again at the championship I will realise it, but for the moment I need to get back scoring points. I’m definitely not in the same position as at the beginning of the championship.”
Sette Câmara last week made his debut behind the wheel of a McLaren Formula 1 car though amassed only 19 laps of the Barcelona circuit owing to a mechanical failure.
