Kimi Raikkonen said Formula 1 "looked like amateurs" in Azerbaijan after a loose drain cover forced the cancellation of first free practice.
Williams' George Russell ran over a dislodged drain cover which caused hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage to the underside of his car according to the team, and forced him to sit out second practice whilst Williams prepared their third chassis.
The session was cancelled whilst marshals inspected some 300 drain covers to ensure they were secured correctly.
Raikkonen said it was a common issue which seems to happen every year and more needed to be done to secure them properly.
"Obviously it was far from ideal for everybody and we looked like amateurs, here today," he said on Friday.
"It’s up to the FIA to make sure the track is as best as possible. But it seems that every year, somewhere a drain cover comes loose or something flies off.
"They say they welded the drain covers but obviously that one was far from welded today. It’s up to them to go and check them all, there’s plenty of people here, but the same thing has happened before here.
"Luckily nobody got hurt, but it obviously destroyed everybody’s day and, plus for the people who came here to watch the practice. It’s far from ideal."
The Alfa Romeo driver was however realtively happy with his day, despite the confusion missing out on FP1 caused.
"It was a confusing day for everyone. It didn’t feel too bad, I think we managed to make the tyres work," he added.
