Antonio Giovinazzi is set to receive the first engine-related penalty of 2019 after taking on new Control Electronics in his Ferrari-powered Alfa Romeo C38.
Ferrari introduced an updated Control Electronics in China in response to the issue that cost Charles Leclerc a likely victory in Bahrain.
Ferrari and Haas took on the new component in China but Alfa Romeo did not, and a subsequent failure on Giovinazzi’s car meant he had to take on another version of the old specification.
As Alfa Romeo has taken on the updated version in Azerbaijan it means Giovinazzi is already on to his third Control Electronics of the campaign.
Under Formula 1 regulations drivers are only permitted two Control Electronics per season and subsequently the Italian is poised to drop 10 places on the grid from wherever he qualifies.
The penalty will be officially confirmed on Friday when the FIA formally publishes a list of updated power unit parts.
Giovinazzi has yet to score a point this season with team-mate Kimi Raikkonen – who has taken on his second Control Electronics – responsible for all 12 on Alfa Romeo’s tally.
