Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat admitted to being “very curious” about the manner in which he was spun by Alfa Romeo rival Antonio Giovinazzi during Formula 1’s Bahrain Grand Prix.
Giovinazzi and Kvyat battled into Turn 11 in the early stages of the race while running on the fringes of the top 10, but the pair collided, resulting in Kvyat being spun.
Stewards investigated the incident but deemed no further action was necessary.
Kvyat went on to classify in 12th position, behind Giovinazzi, having later been sanctioned for speeding in the pit lane.
“I wasn't actually fighting Giovinazzi, to be honest, but he still managed to somehow drive into rear of my car,” said Kvyat.
“I didn't even close the door, because I was struggling with tyres at that point, he was faster, so I left the door open, but, somehow, he didn't want to overtake me, he wanted to drive in the back of my car, so I don't know how he managed that.
“Maybe ask him, I am very curious.
“I saw him, I even left him the corner open. I broke early, he broke even earlier, so I asked myself 'where is he?' so kept doing the corner, like let him one car width and he still… it wasn't enough for him, so maybe you need [to leave] more [space] for him.”
The clash added to a “scrappy” weekend for Kvyat, in which his qualifying prospects were hampered by Toro Rosso erroneously sending him out on used tyres in Q2.
“This weekend started a bit scrappy and we got a lesson hopefully for the next weekend and we'll try to put it more together next time, next weekend,” he said.
“Lap one and start was a bit too much wheel spin I had, so it also didn't help my first lap.
“So, from there onwards when you don't make up positions on lap one you're a bit on a back foot, but I still believe like without those factors that I mentioned I think it could have been a better race. But the pace was good.
