Honda's Marc Marquez finished third practice for the MotoGP Argentina Grand Prix quickest by two-tenths from Jack Miller, with a best time of 1:38.471.
Marquez quickly rose to the top as the session went green but was deposed by Miller in the closing minutes before once again hitting the top of the timing screens with one final effort.
That left Miller 0.206s adrift for Alma Pramac, followed by LCR Honda's Cal Crutchlow in third, just 0.049s adrift of the Australian's time.
It was a highly competitive session with 15 riders covered by one second.
Maverick Vinales was fourth after a late surge moved him up the order, putting him a tenth back on Crutchlow, swiftly followed by Danilo Petrucci.
Marquez's team-mate Jorge Lorenzo, who has been struggling with his pace, made a big leap forward to secure a Q2 spot by finishing eighth fastest, albeit seven-tenths back.
Dovizioso suffered a late crash with just under three minutes left on the clock. The Italian came off his bike at Turn 1 and was 11th fastest, but eighth in the combined chart.
Fabio Quartararo narrowly made the automatic cut for Q2 in ninth.
