Ex-Williams F1 racer Sergey Sirotkin says his opinion on Formula E has completely changed, in the wake of his involvement with Mahindra.
Sirotkin spent 2018 racing in Formula 1 for Williams but long-term backers SMP Racing opted not to continue, while Williams also opted for a fresh line-up.
Sirotkin sampled DTM machinery, has already secured a WEC seat with SMP Racing, and has retained a Formula 1 connection through returning to the Renault test/reserve role he held across 2016/17.
However, he has also tested Mahindra’s Formula E championship and believes the electric single-seater series is an attractive destination.
“Yeah, I mean I really enjoyed it to be honest,” he said on Formula E.
“Honestly I was never a fan of the series before, but those two weeks I worked around this project – preparing for the testing, doing the testing and then doing some analysis after – it’s really changed my opinion completely the opposite way round.
“I left Marrakech with a very strong impression about actually how good the car is, how much fun it is to drive, how good it is as a series in terms of the racing – like a general approach – so honestly I was quite impressed.”
Sirotkin stressed that his priority for 2020 is to secure a Formula 1 return but was receptive to Formula E, should his role with Renault fail to lead to a seat on next year’s grid.
“Potentially as a future [destination], for sure the priority is to be back here on the F1 grid,” he said.
“But if we see that it isn’t going to be possible for me anymore then obviously it’s [Formula E] a great championship and I think it’s a great place for me to be.”
