Charles Leclerc provided a glimpse of Ferrari’s potential as he surged to the top spot during the penultimate morning of Formula 1 pre-season testing.
After ex-GP3 rival Alexander Albon became the first driver to break into the 1:16s this year at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Leclerc set a series of rapid times on Pirelli’s C5 tyres.
Leclerc gradually lowered the benchmark before winding up with a 1:16.231 – within six-hundredths of the overall circuit record, set by Lewis Hamilton at last year’s Spanish Grand Prix.
Albon wound up second for Toro Rosso, while early pacesetter Lando Norris (McLaren) and close pursuant Pierre Gasly (Red Bull) also set times quicker than those achieved on any other test day.
Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg classified fifth, while Racing Point’s Lance Stroll and Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi were also comfortably inside the 1:17s.
Reigning World Champion Lewis Hamilton shied away from setting headline-grabbing efforts but once again Mercedes amassed substantial mileage, with the Briton completing 85 laps of the track.
George Russell placed ninth for Williams while Haas’ Kevin Magnussen rounded out the runners, within two seconds of pacesetter Leclerc.
There were no red flags during the four-hour session as teams and drivers were able to enjoy smooth conditions in atypically warm winter weather at the venue.
Testing will resume for another four hours at 14:00 local time.
