McLaren has confirmed Fernando Alonso will race the #66 entry in the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500 this season.
Alonso is attempting the prestigious race for a second time in order to try and complete motorsport's unofficial 'triple crown'. His first entry in 2017 ended with an engine failure on lap 179.
The #66 represents McLaren's first taste of success at the famous Brickyard from 1972 where Mark Donohue won the race from Al Unser Sr. The M16 McLaren chassis was run by Team Penske.
McLaren is entering the 2019 Indy 500 as their own entry in a single-car effort with Alonso behind the wheel.
After running Honda engines in 2017 thanks to a link-up with the Andretti Autosport team helped by its F1 partnership at the time. With the relationship between McLaren and the Japanese manufacturer now over, the British outfit moved to Chevrolet power for 2019.
The Indy 500 takes place on the May 26.
