Formula 1 World Champions Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton have received nominations for this year’s Laureus World Sports Awards.

Mercedes and Hamilton swept to their respective fifth world titles in 2018, and their achievements have been recognised by Laureus, which founded a now globally-recognised series of sports awards in 1999.

Mercedes has been nominated for Team of the Year for a fifth successive year, having won the category in 2018, the third F1 outfit to have done so after Renault (2006) and Brawn (2010).

Mercedes will face competition from FIFA World Cup-winning French Men's Football Team, the Real Madrid Football Team, NBA champions Golden State Warriors, the European Ryder Cup squad and Norway's Winter Olympic Team.

Hamilton, meanwhile, is up for Sportsman of the Year for the second successive year, having missed out to Roger Federer in 2018.

Also nominated are French football player Kylian Mbappé and Croatian football player Luka Modrić, NBA legend Lebron James, tennis world No.1 Novak Djokovic and long-distance runner Eliud Kipchoge.

From Formula 1 nominees only Michael Schumacher (2002, 2004) and Sebastian Vettel (2014) have taken the accolade, though Hamilton claimed the Breakthrough of the Year trophy in 2008.

The winners will be announced during a ceremony in Monaco on February 18.

“We're very proud to be nominated for the Laureus World Team of the Year Award," said Mercedes Team Principal & CEO, Toto Wolff.

“The 2018 Formula One campaign was our most challenging season yet and we were only able to defend both Championships because of the determination, passion and hard work of every single member of our team.

“It's great to see this kind of team work being recognised and we're honoured to be named alongside some of the greatest sport teams in the world."
