Niko Kari will step up to the Formula 2 championship at this weekend’s Sochi round, replacing Ralph Boschung in MP Motorsport’s line-up.
Kari finished 10th in last year’s GP3 championship and took his maiden win at the Yas Marina finale, remaining in the division for this season, switching from Arden to newcomers MP.
Kari holds only 16th in the standings, with just three points finishes, and has called time on his spell in the tertiary category in order to link up with MP’s Formula 2 outfit.
Kari will be reunited with Dorian Boccolacci at the team, the Frenchman having made the jump from GP3 to F2 with the Dutch squad earlier in the season.
“I’m really happy that MP has had the confidence to promote me to their Formula 2 team”, said Kari.
“The new F2 cars have looked fantastic this season, and I can’t wait to step into one of them myself.
“I’m also looking forward to working with Dorian again, with whom I had a great working relationship during our time as GP3 team-mates.”
Kari will be the fourth different driver to race for MP's Formula 2 squad this year, with ex-F1 racer Roberto Merhi having contested the opening seven rounds alongside the now-axed Boschung.
Merhi will return to the series this weekend with Campos, in place of Roy Nissany.
