Trident's David Beckmann clinched his second consecutive pole position in Monza with a 1:37:959 narrowly beating championship leader Anthoine Hubert by just 0.011s as rain flirted with the circuit in the final stages of the session.
The session was preceded by a shortened 10-minute practice session after the morning session was cancelled due to the sodden conditions which greeted drivers in the early hours, this left drivers little time to prepare for the challenge of the fast and furious Monza circuit.
Hubert will join Beckmann on the front row after being beaten by such a narrow margin despite trading times with the German driver throughout the session with none of his championship rivals in close proximity.
Campos' Leonardo Pulcini failed to grasp pole position at his home event and will start the race third on the grid, behind the Italian will be the Jenzer of Juan Manuel Correa who pipped the second Trident of Giuliano Alesi to fourth place on his final run of the session.
Ferrari-backed Callum Ilott will start the feature race in sixth-place, four places behind ART team-mate and championship rival Hubert despite setting the pace earlier in the session.
Ryan Tveter managed to qualify seventh after slipping down the order after a good start to the session, the American will line-up ahead of Columbia's Tatiana Calderon who topped the initial shortened practice session prior to qualifying.
Pedro Piquet makes it four Trident's in the top 10, heading up the fifth row of the grid with Russia's Nikita Mazepin alongside him in 10th place.
GP3's feature race will get Saturday's proceedings underway with the first race of the weekend at 10:30am local time.
