Fernando Alonso says it's hard to understand how Nico Hulkenberg missed his braking point for the first corner by such a huge distance, causing a massive opening lap crash during the Belgian Grand Prix.
In an incident that echoed the 2012 race when Romain Grosjean was handed a race ban for causing a multi-car crash – an incident Alonso got caught up in – the Spaniard was once again rear-ended and forced into the air.
His McLaren flew over the top of Charles Leclerc's Sauber, forcing the pair to retire, as well Hulkenberg who seemingly missed his braking point and carried far too much speed into the corner.
"Yet again a very big-time missed braking point," Alonso told the BBC. "Last time Romain had a race ban. This time we'll see.
"It's hard to understand how you can miss a braking point that much. You arrive at a speed where it's impossible to negotiate the corner."
Alonso also praised the halo head protection device for doing its job, with images showing tyre marks from Alonso's car on Leclerc's halo.
"The positive side is that we all three are okay, including Charles," he added. "I flew over his car and the halo was a very good thing to have today.
"I think for him it helped, looking at the replay. I was definitely happier that I had the halo. We don't need to prove that it's a good thing to have."
Alonso and Hulkenberg have both been called to the stewards over the incident.
