Max Verstappen has suggested that Daniel Ricciardo has made the wrong career move by opting to switch to Renault over remaining at Red Bull.
Ricciardo was widely expected to remain at Red Bull for 2019 after prolonged contract negotiations, but instead opted to jump ship and signed a two-year deal with Renault.
Ricciardo stressed on Thursday that his decision to move teams was motivated by a personal desire to embark on a fresh start, rather than any negative factors within the Red Bull camp.
Verstappen last year signed up to Red Bull through 2020 and the Dutchman believes his current team-mate has not chosen the best place for his future.
“Of course I think everybody has moments in their careers when they’re frustrated or not happy at the current situation,” said Verstappen.
“I think everybody here wants to win races or wants to win championships but sometimes it’s not like that and you have to really be patient and work hard for it and you need the whole package together.
“That’s what Red Bull is working on at the moment.
“I’m confident they can deliver a car that is capable of winning every race, we just need the whole package and we are working towards that.
“That’s why it was a bit of a surprise for me that he left.
“If it was for a change of scenery I’m not sure it was the best scenery to go to.”
