Valtteri Bottas has edged closer to an engine penalty after Mercedes fitted new components to his W09 for this weekend’s British Grand Prix.
Bottas retired from the preceding race in Austria due to a loss of hydraulic pressure, further hampering his bid for this year’s Formula 1 title.
Mercedes confirmed on Friday morning that Bottas has taken on a third Internal Combustion Engine, third MGU-H, third Turbocharger and second MGU-K.
This means he has reached his season’s allocation for those respective parts.
Mercedes confirmed that “this is a precaution after we suffered high temperatures on his second power unit from heat soak following the retirement in Austria.
“It doesn’t mean PU2 is out of service, it will be used again and thoroughly checked in Germany.”
Mercedes has not made any component changes to Lewis Hamilton’s power unit.
