Force India's Sergio Perez felt Carlos Sainz Jr deserved a penalty for their clash in the braking zone of Turn 1 during the Canadian Grand Prix.
As Perez got a tow from the Renault of Sainz Jr, he moved to the right to go around the outside of Turn 1 to get the inside line for Turn 2, this, however, backfired as the Spaniard also moved to the right without realising Perez was there, and they collided.
Once the Mexican driver had regained his composure in the race, he mentioned on the radio he felt Sainz Jr should have been black-flagged for the incident – despite this, the race stewards decided to take no further action.
"I am very disappointed to come away from this race with no points," said Perez. "The start was good, although I didn’t make up any places, the restart after the Safety Car was even better and I managed to pass Carlos [Sainz].
"I was very surprised when he hit me because I gave him more than enough room and I was ahead: that wasn’t good enough and that’s why I asked for a penalty on the radio. I was able to save the car [from crashing] but by then my race was compromised.
Perez dropped as far back as 14th place and was forced into a different strategy in order to try and get back into the points, this, however, was unsuccessful and he ended the race outside the points for the second race in a row.
"We tried something different with the strategy – going for a two-stopper – but it wasn’t enough to get back in the points. Overtaking was impossible, with these cars you can’t follow another car and pass them unless you have a big advantage.
"It’s a shame because I feel we had the pace to be mixing with the Renaults and we should have scored some good points."
Due to not scoring points while team-mate Esteban Ocon only finished the race in ninth place, Force India only left Montreal with two points to their name and remain in sixth place in the Constructors' Championship.
