Joao Barbosa, 2018 Rolex 24 at Daytona winner and IMSA Weathertech SportsCar Championship standings leader with Action Express Racing, has suffered an injured wrist following a cycling accident.
Barbosa detailed an accident regarding a cycling group, where a group member stopped suddenly and sent the two-time series champion to the ground on his wrist.
As a result, the veteran pilot of the #5 Mustang Sampling Cadillac DPi alongside Filipe Albuquerque will be absent for the upcoming Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen at Watkins Glen International and the Mobil 1 Sportscar Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Having won the previous two races at the iconic Upstate New York circuit, the accident comes at a bad time for Barbosa.
“I am really disappointed to have this accident and I hate to miss these races, especially with the amount of success we’ve had at Watkins Glen – I love that track,” he said, via Racer.
He will be relieved by teammate and fellow IMSA veteran Christian Fittipaldi, alongside whom he claimed the previous two Watkins Glen wins and this year's Rolex 24.
Barbosa's return is currently anticipated to be the Continental Tire Road Race Showcase at Road America, from August 3rd to 5th.
