Max Verstappen has called on his Red Bull team to avoid imposing team orders in future races after he and team-mate Daniel Riccardo crashed into one another during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix
The pair made contact earlier in the race but it was only minor, however several laps later Ricciardo attempted to pass his team-mate for the second time only to run into the rear of the sister RB14, forcing both to retire on the spot.
Verstappen refused to attribute blame for the incident after he was accused of being overly aggressive.
"Yeah, it’s just really disappointing for the team," the Dutchman said. "We lost a lot of points today unnecessarily.
"I don’t think we need to speak about who’s fault because at the end of the day, you know, we are racing for a team, we are representing other people and when this happens it's just not good for the both of us."
Verstappen brushed off their first contact as "hard but fair", and although he admitted the second clash can't happen again, he's called on the team not to use team orders at future races.
"It was hard racing but fair I think, we gave each other space, of course we had this little brush with the wheels but I think in racing that can happen… What happened afterwards of course is not good.
"This has happened before and I think you learn from it and of course we have to make sure that it does not happen again [but] I don’t think letting us not race anymore is the way forward but of course we will talk about it and see what happens.
“As racing drivers, you go through every inch and of course you’re not happy when you collide together as team-mates but, you know, we are very fair to each other so we spoke immediately after the race.”
