Formula 1 fans don't care about which specific tyre compound a driver is using according to Red Bull racer Max Verstappen, who says the system should be simplified.
Currently Pirelli supplies seven different dry weather compounds; the Hypersoft, Ultrasoft, Supersoft, Soft, Medium, Hard and Superhard. Of those it picks three for each race weekend.
Verstappen believes Pirelli should do away with the various titles and simply nominate one tyre as the soft and one as the hard each weekend to make things easier for fans to understand.
"I would only like to see a soft and a hard tyre [at races]. Ultimately people do not have to know if it's ultrasoft or supersoft," said the Dutchman.
"When you go to a track and you take an ultrasoft and a soft, then you call the ultrasoft a soft one and the soft one will be the hard tyre. I think people do not care how soft the tyre really is."
F1 used to adopt a similar system with the prime and option tyre labels, but this was switched up when Pirelli joined the sport as sole tyre supplier and increased the compound range in an effort to boost overtaking.
Verstappen also commented on the current state of overtaking and says in his opinion it was "a lot more fun" before the cars were changed to include wider tyres and lower wings.
"It was a lot more fun in 2016," he added. "You could follow each other better and, in some way, it was more gratifying.
"Since 2017 it's a lot harder and less fun to really race each other. The breaking distance is shorter and it's just very hard to follow each other The car can also make unexpected movements and suddenly break out."
