Daniel Ricciardo headed the timesheets on the second day of the second pre-season test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, posting a new track record in the process.
Amid a flurry of quick times in the morning session, Ricciardo wound up with a 1:18.047, on Hypersofts, three-tenths below the previous record, set by Felipe Massa on slick tyres in 2008.
Ricciardo’s time was 0.353s faster than reigning World Champion Lewis Hamilton, who drove in the morning, before handing over to Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas for the afternoon session.
Bottas placed third, 0.513s adrift of Ricciardo, as both Red Bull and Mercedes racked up substantial mileage in warm and sunny conditions at the Spanish Grand Prix venue.
Sebastian Vettel was a late replacement for unwell Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen for the morning session and he finished fourth, before the Finn was deemed fit to resume test duties.
Brendon Hartley briefly caused a red flag when his Toro Rosso stopped at the end of the pit lane, but recovered to finish fifth overall.
McLaren’s Fernando Alonso placed sixth, his best time coming on Hypersofts, but once more the operation was delayed by an issue.
Alonso completed 47 laps during the first two hours of running but an oil leak halted his MCL33 on track, and he did not re-appear until the final 15 minutes, as McLaren was forced into an engine change.
The delay comes a day after Stoffel Vandoorne suffered three stoppages, limiting his running to 38 laps, and leaving McLaren comfortably at the foot of the mileage charts this week.
Renault split running between Carlos Sainz Jr. and Nico Hulkenberg and the pair collaborated to amass the most mileage of any team, logging 190 laps.
Romain Grosjean endured a disrupted day for Haas, missing most of the afternoon session due to an oil leak, but returned to the circuit during the final few minutes.
Raikkonen was ninth, having taken over from Vettel, ahead of Williams' Lance Stroll, the aforementioned Hulkenberg and Force India’s Esteban Ocon.
Charles Leclerc finished second only to Ricciardo on the individual lap charts but brought out the red flag with five minutes remaining when he spun off at Turn 12 on his 160th lap.
The session was extended for a few minutes, following Leclerc's off, in order for teams to simulate a standing start on the grid.
Williams' Sergey Sirotkin brought up the rear of the field.
