Lando Norris will step up to the role of test and reserve driver with McLaren in 2018, off the back of his title-winning campaign in Formula 3.
Norris, who turns 18 next week, joined McLaren’s young driver programme at the start of the season, and has gradually increased his role with the team across the course of the campaign.
Norris participated in the in-season test in Hungary for McLaren and impressed with his speed and application, before wrapping up the F3 title in his rookie year.
The Briton will conduct post-race tyre testing in Brazil next week before travelling to compete in the Macau Grand Prix, ahead of an anticipated move into Formula 2 in 2018.
“I’m so excited to be joining McLaren as test and reserve driver for 2018,” said Norris, who formally replaces Jenson Button in the role.
“The last 12 months have been an incredible journey for me – I’ve enjoyed every single minute – and this is just an amazing way to bring the year to an end.
“I’m really looking forward to helping the team, starting next week with the tyre test at Interlagos, and I will work harder than ever to learn and develop across the next year.
“I have two excellent teachers in Fernando [Alonso] and Stoffel [Vandoorne], and I will do my best to help with the team’s efforts to get back to the front."
