Renault driver Jolyon Palmer labelled his sixth-place finish at the Singapore Grand Prix as “huge”, after collecting the best result of his Formula 1 career.
Palmer entered the weekend without a point to his name in 2017, while Renault confirmed that the Briton will not be part of the team’s plans next year, having signed Carlos Sainz Jr.
In a wet/dry Singapore Grand Prix, defined by a dramatic first-lap clash involving several leading contenders, Palmer made progress off the line and ultimately came home seventh.
“I’m so happy. It’s pretty huge. I don’t really mind about what’s happened the whole weekend, I’m just happy for the race,” he said.
"I would have been happy in any race to finish sixth.
“I finally get some points for the season and I have seven more races to do a good job and go out with my head held high with Renault. I’ve done one – I have six more to do.
“You want to show every weekend the best you can do.
“I think the result this weekend is finally a bit of good luck, because obviously there were cars ahead who dropped out. But we negotiated all the conditions well.”
Palmer's Renault team-mate, Nico Hulkenberg, held fourth place before retiring due to an oil leak.
Renault holds seventh place in this year's Constructors' Championship.
