Robert Kubica has admitted he was caught out by the new wider cars during his first outing in the Renault R.S.17 after he clattered the garage wall.
The Polish driver is exploring the prospect of a Formula 1 comeback and got the opportunity to test Renault's 2017 car during the Hungarian in-season test this week, having previously driven a 2012-spec E20.
However the new generation of cars are now 200mm wider, featuring much larger rear tyres, which Kubica says caught him out as he clipped the wall, causing a sign to fall down, narrowly missing the car and a Renault mechanic.
"The start of the day was not so easy, it was probably one of the biggest f**k ups in Formula 1," joked Kubica. "To be honest, I was so concentrated on the people in front of my garage, I forgot the cars are longer and wider.

"That was the only mistake I did so that’s positive. It would be better to not do anything, but I think it has been a very productive day, especially for me, but also for the team."
Kubica says the new cars are vastly different to what he's used to and it took some time to acclimatise.
"[It was] busy behind the wheel, the cars are fast. The biggest…not difficulty…the difference is this car has nothing similar or same as the cars I have been testing lately.
"When you have so many things different, it normally takes a bit of time to adapt, but I think we have to be happy and of course you always want more but we have to be realistic. It was not an easy day but I think we have done a good job."
Kubica finished fourth on the leaderboard having amassed 142 laps.
