Daniel Ricciardo never thought he would win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after finding himself in 17th position following an early stop to clear debris from one of his brake ducts.
The Australian says he would have bet "all his money" on not winning the race, but a series of chaotic incidents handed him the lead to score an unlikely victory, his first of the season.
"It was a crazy race, we knew the podium was a chance after the restart but then we heard the problems with Lewis and Seb," he said, referring to an unscheduled stop for leader Hamilton's loose headrest and a penalty for second-placed Vettel.
"It was just a crazy race. I made an unplanned pit stop at the beginning, after a few laps we had some debris in the brakes so had to stop and clean it, we dropped back to 17th I think.
"Did I think then I’d win, absolutely not! I would have put all my money on it.
Ricciardo started the race in tenth after a qualifying mistake saw him end up in the wall, but staying out of trouble on Sunday paid off as those around him encountered various issues.
"Obviously yesterday I was disappointed with the mistake. I knew today would be a different outcome, I said yesterday we had to stay out of trouble and it certainly paid off today. Big thanks to Red Bull, nice to get one car home and on the top step
"I'm honestly speechless after the race, on the cool down lap I was just giggling like a little schoolboy."
